Relay for Life
Hey guys,

I volunteered to run/walk for this year's Relay For Life - put on by the American Cancer Society.

The Relay is an overnight event that supports the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. The Society works every day to prevent cancer and save lives by supporting groundbreaking research, affecting public policies that protect us from cancer, and educating people on how to prevent or detect cancer early. By participating in the Relay, my team and our sponsors can help the American Cancer Society accelerate the progress toward a cancer-free future.

I know as our Slytherin house unity project we all contributed to the cancer society on behalf of our head of house. I was hoping a few of you would be interested in donating once more.

Our team, AFRL Wright Research Site, has a goal of raising $3000.00 for the Relay. If you would like to sponsor me (even a small donation helps) please visit the link below.

Follow This Link to visit my personal web page and help me in my efforts to support American Cancer Society: Relay For Life Wright Patt/Riverside, OH

Thanks everyone!

Leaving Brunch?
Well, we now know who won the house cup, but were there any other good announcements from the Leaving Brunch? We had to head to the airport at the crack o' dawn.

It was blast; I'm sure we all wish we were still in Salem, or at least could have taken Professor S home with us. I enjoyed meeting so many of you from the board. Btw, Roxanne saw the Domus Rox shirts at the airport and loved them! We also took up a donation collection at the house party which will go to Dana Farber, the cancer research institute in Boston.

Hey everyone. I was a member of your house, but I ended up not being able to go to TWH due to health/money problems. I'm hoping someone will see this, because I'm just curious - what house did we end up being?

Introduction / Poll
*waves hello* Hey all, I'm Julie, aka slytherincesss in the fandom, and Domus Rox is my house! I will be doing a few things at The Witching Hour, including manning the drabble booth Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. -.- and, along with maegunnbatt and hermorrine, I will be presenting Heterosexuality and Feminism in a Male/Male Slash-Centric Fandom Sunday, October 9, at 3:00 p.m. in the Salem Waterfront Ballroom 1. I'll be giving a fanfic reading Sunday night as well, at 8:00 p.m. I did go to Nimbus 2003, which was a blast, and I'm looking forward to being a more active participant at this convention. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone :D

I've noticed that some people are bringing souvenirs to give away at TWH -- I have a poll on souvenirs HERE, and would appreciate any input.

And now I must go pack and continue to get ready for our big week ahead! See you all in Salem!

Hi! *waves*
I would not normally come post over on a house LiveJournal, but our Heads of House really wanted me to pass on the information that was on _witchinghour_ again. Volunteers earn points for their house, and we're especially in need of Quidditch volunteers. If you're playing on a professional team, you won't be able to referee, but anyone else is welcome! Referees and Snitch movers work in pairs, by the way, so that takes some of the pressure off, too. (And, best of all, you get to blow a wizardy purple whistle if you're a referee.) Snitch movers stroll around the pitch and run across once in a while with the Snitch, but the referees won't need to run so much.

The Witching Hour's Wicked Awesome Volunteer Team is seeking a few more helping hands for the conference. Could you spare a few hours to do something you'll mostly likely enjoy? We are still in need of the following:

Quidditch
Support crew--referees and human Snitches!--are needed for the American Professional Quidditch Association tournament on Saturday, October 8! House players who want to immerse themselves in the game, (former) armchair coaches, and those willing to speak up when fair is foul and foul is fair have the necessary skills. National Public Radio will cover the event for their program "Only a Game." Training is available on Saturday morning, so student registrants and weekend attendees are encouraged to join in. Eight volunteers are needed.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Interested? Please e-mail volunteers@witchinghour.org.

Thanks again! See you in Salem!

HBP Book Talk
Well, we've quieted down a bit, but with school work and all, it's not too surprising. Sorry for the last-minute notice -- the ol' brain ain't what it used to be -- but if you're in the Dayton, OH/Cincinnati, OH/N. KY area and are interested, Lane Library in Hamilton is hosting "Harry Potter and the Anticipated Book Talk" tomorrow evening, Thursday, Sept. 29, at 7:00 p.m., conducted by yours truly. For more information about the library and to contact them for information, visit our website: www.lanepl.org

Houses...
I just saw on TWH message boards that we're going to find out which house we're in when we register on site. I was thinking it would be after we were all seated together for the Welcoming Feast. Of course, this may be the wiser way of doing it. Less violence may break out. ;-)

Hi everyone,

I have been watching and posting on TWH site, but just noticed the post about the Livejournal. Yay! Then it took awhile to figure out how to use it. (Not lending much to the Ravenclaw theory, am I?) I looove the Cafepress stuff! So cute!

So, it seems like quite a few people here think we're Slytherin. Hmm... that's the one house I can't picture myself in. I also don't read much fanfic and don't care who gets together as long as the story is good. Or if anyone gets together. (Although I have to admit I think Luna is perfect for Harry.) I don't really like to take the stories in a way other than what JKR is writing. I'm sure I'm in the minority there, but hope you all won't turn hostile! I'm very friendly. :-)

I live in Pittsburgh and am traveling to Salem with my mom, who's just attending a few of the events. My friend and I were at Nimbus in Orlando and along with some other great people were Official Quidditch Cheerleaders! (We made that position up, but were very good at it!)

I'm a director here in Pittsburgh and own an acting studio. It's pretty fun. I graduated from Point Park with a degree in Acting with an emphasis on Musical Theatre. Let's see... I live with my two kitties - Hedwig and Fawkes. To suppliment my fledgling income, I make HP style bags and sell them on Ebay. (username: mary_poppins) if you're interested. It takes a lot of time, but it's great fun. I used to work at Disney World, which isn't as great as it sounds. And... I think that's it!

So, I tried catching up with everything here. Are we all meeting for dinner somewhere? And... anything else we need to do to show some team spirit? Because er... some of those houses look scary.

Nice meeting you all!

Speaking of donating
No matter what venue you use to donate to the hurricane survivors, it is important that we do. That includes manhours, helping hands, donating your skills if needed, anything.

I've copied and pasted this up top, so to speak, in case folks haven't been scrolling down. We still have time to decide if we want to do anything formally. OH, if we let the charity send the card, we would have to get an address for her. Something to keep in mind.

I heard back from TWH. They can't give us legal advise because we're not a client (no surprise), but nor can they help us gather or disseminate funds because "the IRS's non-profit rules prevent us from working to raise money for an unrelated non-profit." So I called the American Cancer Society to ask about how we'd go about this. We don't have to donate to the ACS, but I figure the concept would carry over regardless of charity.

What we can do is make an honor donation (which is what I think a lot of un-incorporated fan sites do). One person can gather funds and make a single lump donation on the group's behalf -or- we can make donations individually. The charity sends a card to the honoree regardless, either one card with our names signed to it (in case of the lump donation) or a card for each individual making a donation. We could also have a card sent to a point person to bring to TWH if we'd like to sign it there to present it to her at the con. Donations are tax deductible, so if deducting your donation is important, please note that person would need to make an individual donation.

Maybe we could do this two-fold: donation (whichever way we do it) and then have a Domus Rox card at TWH for folks to sign, whether they donate or not? Just a good will thing. On the other hand, I don't know if she'd want some big banner at TWH asking folks to sign a card, ya know? Thoughts?

Pirating in ... to issue a challenge! Help Katrina victims
Arg... I'm boarding you... just to make this challenge. I'm from Tony Toledo's house and I want to issue you a challenge. This could also be your unity project. So here it is... assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina by donating as much as you can to any organizations that is and will assist the victims of Katrina.

I'd like to take this moment to ask for the assistance of house Domus Rox. We have a great community and I'm excited to meet you all (even if you didn't get into Toledo's house ;-)).

If you're not an American, I'm not sure if you know but the gulf coast was hit by a category 4 hurricane called Katrina. At this moment, the people that stayed in this region have been devistated and have lost everything. To add injury to insult though, there has been a shortage in needed life sustaining supplies, such as water, food and shelter. People are living in contaminated and unsanitary conditions and people are dying in the streets.

The victims of Katrina have been calling out for help and it's time we assist them. I call upon all of you to please donate as much as you can. Even a dollar is appreciated, because dollars add up. So I call on our house... PLEASE DONATE to some organization that will assist.

The American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) is one such that accepts donations online.

Here's another link of charitable organizations involved in the Hurricane Katrina relief. http://www.apo.org/charities_list.shtml

Thanks once again!

More recon
Yeah, Toledo's pirates are likely our closest competition. They too are planning shirts; however, their shop owner is making a small profit, it seems, to help her finance her way from Cali. to Salem. I will say her designed logo is adorable (there's likely an extra pull for me since my alma mater mascot is a pirate (go Hamp-ton!)):

Shipping Time
Okay, I ordered a shirt and a button from our shop http://www.cafepress.com/roxihouse on August 23. It arrived today, August 29. So that should give you an idea of shipping time at standard delivery costs (my order cost $4.30 to ship). The quality is good, and I am very happy with the products. So that being said I recommend that the latest you should order a shirt or whatever from the shop is September 29th, 2005--in order for it to get to you before the conference. There is express shipping but it will cost you. So order early. Cafepress is very quick about things, but remember all printing takes time.

I intend to update one of the mini posters, for posting on hotel room doors something like "Domus Rox Crossing" or something like that. But if you think that is lame, let me know. I just want something that will tell others that Domus Rox, Rocks! Maybe "Rockin' Here!" Lemme know what you think.

My heart goes out to any witches or wizards caught in the rath of Katrina. Blessed be.

Update on our room of requirement
Hello Domus Rox!
Here's a little update on our room of requirement, Brother's Deli.
I went in this weekend and asked the father/owner (greek family run business...when you go you'll understand) about decorations and he said YES! YES! i'm not sure he knows exactly what that means (as my fiance pointed out to me) but it seems like some balloons and streamers in our section of the place will be fine. He seemed very excited about it, cute little old guy that he is. anyhoo, yay to some decorations. it's good food and good people there. i'm sure you'll all like.
i took some photos of the place and a bunch of downtown Salem. when i get a chance, i'll post them. hopefully within the next few days...

Suggestion for Unity Project II
Hallo Housemates,

Firstly, welcome, welcome to our new additions. We seem to post in spurts, but there's usually a few of us lurking about.

The main reason for this post, unfortunately, is a bit sad. If you've visited our HoH's website (rachelcaine.com), you may have seen the notice in her "about" section that she was diagnosed in May with early-stage breast cancer. She has an LJ of her own and tracks her health progress as well as her writing one. She seems to be doing quite well, all things considered. If you or someone you know has been treated for cancer, you know the cure is sometimes rougher than the disease and trying to keep up with regular demands takes that much more effort.

I think it would be nice gesture from us if we gave her something Domus Rox with as many of our signatures on it as we can get, just to let her know more good wishes are heading her way. If y'all think this is a good idea, logistics would be the next thing to figure out. If you have any other ideas, post away.

Also, if you'd like to make your own personal donations to a cancer research organization near and dear to you, it's never too early or too late.

General Info

I, er. Ok, fandom! I've been in this fandom for...a few years. A lot more than any other fandom I've been in, mainly because I love it. I love the people and the canon and the fanon produced. I love the fact that it's such a well-loved bit of media, that we're able to attend a convention for it.

In fandom, I draw stuff to entertain my fellow fandomers. It's highly addictive. *hee*

Other than that, I work in a college back home, but right now I've been living in London, soon to be vacationing in Europe --in three days, AIEE-- before heading down (up? around, maybe)to Salem for TWH. Exciting stuff.

Uhhh...oh!! I'm part of some things at TWH--

From Sentences to Sketches: Critical Analysis of the Creation of HP Fanart - October 7th, 9:00am

Sketch Booth - October 9th, 2:00pm - 4:00pm

And my Room of Requirement hangout is the The HP Fanartists League

And finally, I can't guess what house I'm in, because I've never been good that that sort of stuff. But I will die of laughter if it turns out to be Slytherin. Yee haw!

Can't wait to see you there!

Better late than never, I suppose?
Hello, all! I am the master of procrastination, apparently, and have somehow not done this yet :P

Name: Justine
Age: 21
From: New Jersey

I've been a Harry Potter fan for about four years and a fandom member for just over two years or so. I write a little, RP in two different games, and lurk quite a bit more than I should. TWH is my first HP convention and I'm really excited to get there and meet everyone, but I'm guessing that is true of everyone :)

Aside from HP, my life and I are both very boring things, really. School, part time job, etc. etc.

As for our house, I can honestly say that I have no idea who we are because I am always sorted into Ravenclaw with a few instances of Gryffindor in there as well, but I do think our HoH letter did sound vaguely Slytherinesque so....who knows! Just over a month until we find out anyway, yeah?

Anyway, that's really it. I'll just stop myself from rambling about nothing by saying hello and I look forward to seeing you all in October.
